During my internship with Florida Repertory Theatre, our Education Department produces 60 Minute plays for local school districts, to spread knowledge and education about theatre. One of the plays produced with the company was William Shakespeare's "Hamlet."
In this production, The designer wanted Ophelia's jackets to represent her character, as well as her innocence. The designer was also inspired by the famous painting "Ophelia."
This corset-bodice period coat was cut and assembled using a McCall's costume pattern to use as a layout for the fashion and lining fabric. Everything is domestic machined stitched, with a decorative brooch to use as an opening and closing for the front of the garment.
A second one was also made for the production (white floral print), with the same method. Using only the fashion fabric, with the delicacy and stiffness of the fabric being able to hold the shape of the garment, without fraying.
